A new Space for Public Administrations and Services of General Interest in an Enlarged Union

The construction of a united Europe already dates back half a century, for we shall soon be celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of the Treaty of Rome. In the beginning, this historical and political process was initiated mainly to bring national economies closer together and create a Common Market. For a long time discussions focused on the nature of the new institutions entrusted with this undertaking. As the parties gradually moved farther away from the supranational concept, the spotlight fell on the position and role of the Member States in the European Community (which has since become the European Union) and the effects of their participation in this institution. In this study we shall look at two vital components of these Member States, namely public administrations and public or general interest services.
